Drug Uses
Zyrtec is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are taken to prevent runny nose, sneezing, itching and watering of the eyes, as also other allergic symptoms. Zyrtec is prescribed to allergies, hives (urticaria), and other allergic inflammatory conditions.
How Taken
Zyrtec is produced in tablets for oral use. The usual dose is once a day. It may be taken regularly or only when allergy symptoms show up. Read carefully the instructions on the prescription label and check with your doctor any part of it that you may find unclear. You should take Zyrtec the way it is prescribed
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting treatment with Zyrtec, inform your physician in case you have kidney or liver disease. You may require a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy with Zyrtec. Zyrtec is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Zyrtec is known to get into breast milk and it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor first if you are breast feeding. Patients over 60 years of age are more likely to experience side effects from Zyrtec. You may need a lower dose of this medication.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember if it is not later than 1 hour. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects may include an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; throat closing; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). In such case, discontinue taking Zyrtec and find instant medical help. There can appear other not that serious symptoms, such as: fatigue, sleepiness, dizziness; headache; or dry mouth. In any of these cases, you do not need to stop taking Zyrtec but you still have to consult your doctor. There are also possible symptoms that are not mentioned above. Talk to your doctor about any unusual experience that is especially bothersome.
Storage
Keep at 20-25°C (68-77°F); temperature changes allowed between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical help. Overdose symptoms are not well known but may include: extreme sleepiness, confusion, and weakness.
