Drug Uses
Lexapro is an antidepressant, part of the family of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Lexapro is used in the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
How Taken
Lexapro comes can be found as tablets and a liquid suitable for oral use. The usual dose is once a day and can be combined with or without food. You should take Lexapro exactly as prescribed. You should not take bigger or smaller quantities or use it more frequently than instructed. Do not stop taking Lexapro even if you feel well. This drug needs to be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt. If you feel you should stop using Lexapro, first consult your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Lexapro,you have to tell your doctor if you have, kidney disease, liver disease, suffer from seizures or mania or you have suicidal thoughts. It is possible that you may not be able to take Lexapro, or you may need a special a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Lexapro should not be used in combination with citalopram (Celexa). Also, if you have ever had an allergic reaction to citalopram (Celexa), it is possible to develop an allergic reaction to Lexapro. Do not use Lexapro without first talking to your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to either medication in the past. Lexapro is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is not any information if this drug can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Lexapro is known to get into breast milk and it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is too close to the next one, ignore the missed one and resume your usual dose schedule.
Possible Side Effects
In case you observe any of the listed below side effects, stop taking Lexapro and seek emergency medical help:
-an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; or hives, throat closing);
-chills or fever
-an irregular pulse or heartbeat;
-low blood pressure (weakness, dizziness);
-high blood pressure (blurred vision, severe headache);
If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking Lexapro and talk to your doctor:
- nervousness, headache, tremor, or anxiety;
-nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, or changes in appetite or weight;
- insomnia or sleepiness or
- impotence,decreased sex drive, or difficulty having an orgasm.

Storage
Keep Lexapro at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Overdose
Symptoms of a Lexapro overdose may include vomiting, nausea, tremor, dizziness, drowsiness, sweating, and a fast heartbeat.
