Drug Uses
Prevacid is taken to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prevacid is purposed to treat and prevent erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), stomach and intestinal ulcers and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid may also be prescribed for other conditions, which are not mentioned above.
How Taken
Prevacid is an extended-release (long-acting) capsule for oral use. The usual dose is once a day, before meal. You should take Prevacid the way it is prescribed. You should not take larger or smaller doses or take it more frequently than instructed. Swallow the capsule whole. In case you find it difficult to swallow, put the content of the capsule into a spoon of applesauce and swallow immediately without chewing. You must not chew or crush the granules. Do not stop treatment with Prevacid even if you feel better. If you want to discontinue taking this drug, consult your doctor first.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting treatment with Prevacid, inform your doctor if you have ever suffered from liver disease. It is possible that this drug may not be suitable for you or you may need a special dosage adjustment or special medical observation during treatment. Prevacid is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not likely to be harmful to an unborn baby. In case of pregnancy, Prevacid should not be taken without first consulting your doctor. It is not declared whether Prevacid passes into breast milk. Do not take Prevacid without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
If you skip a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is close to the next dose, ignore the missed dose and follow your usual dose schedule. You should not take two doses at a time in order to make up for the missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Serious side effects regarding the use of Prevacid are very uncommon. You should stop taking Prevacid and find instant medical help if you experience an allergic reaction (breathing difficulty; throat closing; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
There may also occur other less serious side effects. Do not stop taking Prevacid and advice your doctor if you experience
-diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain;
-dizziness; or
-headache.
There may appear side effects that are not mentioned above. If you experience any unusual conditions, inform your physician.
Storage
Keep Prevacid at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Overdose
If you have any doubts about possible overdose, find instant medical help. Overdose symptoms are unknown.
