Drug Uses
Prilosec is prescribed to relieve various acid-related stomach and esophagus problems. If you complain of persistent heartburn (and have been trying to treat it and have changed your diet) Prilosec may be appropriate for you. Prilosec (Omeprazole) can be used for treating various acid-related stomachs and / or throat (esophagus) problems (e.g., ulcers, GERD, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome). If you suffer from certain ulcers, your doctor may prescribe you Prilosec in combination with certain antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin).
How Taken
Prilosec is a delayed-release 20mg tablet and the usual dose is once a day (every 24 hours) for 14 days before eating. You should not take longer than 14 days or repeat a 14-day course more frequently than every 4 months unless your doctor gives you other instructions. The tablets should not be crushed, broken or chewed. This may weaken their effects.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting treatment with Prilosec, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have experienced: stomach problems (e.g., tumors), liver problems, any allergies. The use of this drug should be avoided during pregnancy. In case you are pregnant or may become pregnant, consult your doctor. It is not declared whether Prilosec goes into breast milk. Check with your physician before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is too close to the next one, ignore the missed one and resume your usual dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects may include: constipation, diarrhea, stomachache, gas, nausea, and loss of appetite, dizziness, or headache during the first few days as your body needs time to adjust to it. If any of these symptoms become persistent or bothersome, inform your doctor. You should also contact your physician in case of nervousness, back or joint pain, sleep disturbances, chest pain, cough, unusual thirst, and change in amount of urine or vision changes. Other reactions are ringing in the ears, loss of hair, swelling of the stomach or fatigue. If you experience any of the listed symptoms, contact your physician immediately. An allergic reaction can include itching, rash, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. In case you observe other than the mentioned conditions, do not doubt to contact you doctor.
Storage
Keep at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) and prevent from light and moisture.
Overdose
If you have doubts of possible overdose, If contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Overdose symptoms may include: unusual sweating, confusion, blurred vision, seizures, unusually fast heartbeat.
More Information
Prilosec is not suitable for you in case of:
-occasional heartburn
-have one episode of heartburn per week or less
-you want immediate heartburn relief.
