Drug Uses

Yasmin is a birth control pill that is taken to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin is different than the other birth control pills because it contains a progestin hormone called drospirenone. It does not protect you against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases.

How Taken

This oral contraceptive comes can be found in packets of 28 tablets. The first 21 tablets are the active pills, which contain the active ingredients (hormones) ethinyl estradiol and drospirenon. The last seven tablets in the 28-tablet packet are used as reminder pills; they differ in color and do not contain any hormone. Day 1 start: You should take the first active pill from the first pack during the first 24 hours of your period. There is no need to use a second method of birth control, since you are starting the pill at the beginning of your period. Sunday start: Take the first active pill of the first pack on Sunday after your period has started, even if you are still bleeding. If your period starts on Sunday, start the pack that same day. In this case you should use another method of birth control (such as condoms or spermicides) in case you have sex during the 7 day period after you have started your first packet.

Warnings/Precautions

Before starting using Yasmin, you should consult your doctor first and inform him if you have ever had a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, blood clot, angina, a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder; heart disease, breast, uterine, or another hormone-related cancer; or undiagnosed, abnormal vaginal bleeding. Before taking Yasmin, it is also essential to alarm your doctor if you have high cholesterol; diabetes; gallbladder disease; epilepsy; migraines or other headaches; a history of depression; a history of scanty or irregular menstrual periods; need an extended period of bed rest due to surgery or illness or smoke cigarettes. Yasmin is in the FDA pregnancy category X. It has been reported to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Hormonal changes during pregnancy may lead to very serious negative effects on a developing baby. If you are pregnant or there is a chance of getting pregnant, you must not take drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Yasmin is known to pass into breast milk and may cause a decreased milk production. Do not take Yasmin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Smoking should be avoided. It greatly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot formation.

Possible Side Effects

VAGINAL BLEEDING During the use of Yasmin, you may experience irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting. Irregular bleeding can be slight staining between menstrual periods or breakthrough bleeding, which is a flow much like a regular period. Such conditions can appear during the first few months of oral contraceptive use, but may also occur after you have been taking the pill for some time. This can be only temporary and usually is not an indicator of any serious problems. It is important not discontinue taking Yasmin following your dose schedule. If the bleeding occurs in more than one cycle or lasts for more than a few days, contact your doctor. CONTACT LENSES In case you wear contact lenses and you observe a change in vision or experience problems wearing your lenses, contact your doctor. FLUID RETENTION Oral contraceptives may lead to edema (fluid retention) with swelling of the fingers or ankles and may cause blood pressure raise. In case you experience fluid retention, contact your doctor. MELASMA It is possible to appear a spotty darkening of the skin, particularly of the face. OTHER SIDE EFFECTS Other side effect reactions may include headache, change in appetite, nervousness, dizziness, depression, loss of scalp hair, rash, and vaginal infections. If you experience any of those symptoms, consult your physician.

Storage

Keep at 25°C (77°F); temperature changes are allowed between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).

Overdose

Overdoses are not declared to cause serious ill effects as there have been observed acute ingestion of large doses of other oral contraceptives by young children. Over dosage symptoms may include: nausea and withdrawal bleeding. Drospirenone, however, is a spironolactone analogue, which has antimineralocorticoid properties. Serum concentration of potassium and sodium, and evidence of metabolic acidosis, should be monitored in cases of overdose.

More Information

Before prescribing you Yasmin, your physician will consider your medical and family history and will examine you. You need to be re-examined at least once a year. Make sure your doctor is informed about family history of any of the conditions mentioned previously in this leaflet. Try to keep all appointments with your healthcare provider as this is a time to determine if there are early signs of side effects of oral contraceptive use. You should not use this drug for any other conditions than prescribed. Yasmin is given especially for you and you should not give it to other people.
