Drug Uses
Zithromax is purposed to treat many different types of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
How Taken
Zithromax is produced in capsules, tablets and liquid for oral use. The usual dose is once a day for a period of 2-5 days. You should take Zithromax the way it is prescribed. You should not take bigger or smaller doses or take it more frequently than prescribed. Before using the liquid, make sure it is well shaked so that the substances are well mixed. The capsules and tablets have to be taken with a full glass of water. You should not discontinue taking Zithromax even if you feel better. If you need to stop, first consult your physician. Zithromax liquid should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. The capsule and tablets can be taken alone or in combination with food. If you have stomach problems, you should take the drug with food.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting any treatment with Zithromax, you should inform your doctor in case you have liver disease. In such case you may not be able to take Zithromax, or you may need a lower dose or special medical monitoring during treatment. Zithromax is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Zithromax is not known to get into breast milk and whether it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor first if you are breast feeding.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember if it is not later than 1 hour. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
In case you observe any of the following serious reactions, discontinue taking Zithromax and find instant medical help: liver damage (nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue) or an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; throat closing; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); There are other not that serious side effects that are more common. You should keep taking Zithromax and consult your doctor if you experience vomiting, nausea, diarrhea,unusual dizziness, abdominal pain, fatigue, or headache; a rash; vaginal yeast infection; or increased sensitivity to sunlight. There may occur other symptoms that are not mentioned above. Consult your doctor about any unusual condition that you may observe or that is especially bothersome.
Storage
Zithromax tablets should be kept between 15° to 30° C (59° to 86°F). Store constituted suspension between 5° to 30°C (41° to 86°F) and discard when full dosing is completed or within 10 days. Shake well before each use. Oversized bottle provides shake space. Keep tightly closed.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, find instant medical help. Overdose symptoms may include: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
More Information
During treatment with Zithromax, you should avoid prolonged sunlight exposure. The drug can increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. You should use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable.
