Drug Uses
Zoloft is a prescription medicine prescribed to treat panic disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (also called OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (also called PTSD) in adults. Zoloft can be also used to treat OCD in children (ages 6-12) and adolescents (ages 12-17).
How Taken
Zoloft can be found as tablets for oral use. The usual dose is once a day in combination with food or alone. You should take Zoloft the way it is prescribed. You should not take bigger or smaller doses or take it more frequently than prescribed. You should continue taking Zoloft even if you feel well. You should not discontinue treatment without first talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually. This drug needs to be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting any treatment with Zoloft, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease; liver disease; suffer from seizures or from mania or have suicidal thoughts. In such cases your condition may not allow you to use Zoloft, or you may need adjustment of the dose or a special monitoring during treatment. Zoloft is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is not any information if it can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Zoloft is known to get into breast milk and it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
If you take Zoloft only once a day in the morning, take the missed dose as soon as you realize it. However, if it is too close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you take Zoloft once a day at bedtime and do not remember to take it until the next morning, just skip the missed dose. You should not take two doses at a time.
Possible Side Effects
In case you have any of the following reactions, discontinue taking Zoloft and contact your doctor immediately: an irregular heartbeat or pulse; an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; throat closing; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); or chills or fever. There are other less serious symptoms, in which case you do not need to stop treatment but still you should inform your physician: tremor, headache; nervousness, nausea, anxiety; diarrhea, dry mouth, sleepiness or insomnia; changes in appetite or weight; decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm. There can alo occur complaints that are not mentioned above. Alarm your doctor about any unusual condition that you may experience or you find especially bothersome.
Storage
Keep at 25°C (77°F); temperature changes permitted between 15° - 30°C (59° - 86°F).
Overdose
In case of an overdose, get instant medical help. Overdose symptoms may include: vomiting, nausea, tremor, agitation, seizures, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils.
More Information
As Zoloft may cause drowsiness and dizziness, you should be cautious while driving, working with machines, or performing other hazardous activities. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, its better to avoid such Alcohol should be used cautiously. It may increase drowsiness or dizziness while taking Zoloft.
